SOUTH CENTRE- The Central Columbia Blue Jays (4-3) took care of business against the South Williamsport Mounties (4-3) during homecoming, 48-27, on Friday night.
After a let down to Danville last week, Central rebounded with a strong performance against a good Mounties team. Trae Devlin had his way with the South Williamsport secondary throwing for four touchdowns, three of which went to Zander Bradley. The first put the Blue Jays ahead by 10 after a circus catch and toe tap in the back of the end zone by Bradley.
“The cornerback fell asleep so we hit them with the long pass. Trae (Devlin) put it where only I could get it,” Bradley said. “Trae and the offensive line made that touchdown happen.”
Isaac Gensemer, a player who is considered “the workhorse” by his Central teammates, got to work from there. Gensemer added touchdowns on two straight drives for the Blue Jays, giving them a sizeable lead.
The Blue Jays did not turn it over at all, and also cut down on penalties from last week against the Ironmen, which was a point of emphasis for the coaching staff.
“We really just worked on mental toughness this week, we worked on little things to cut down on the penalties,” Central head coach Scott Dennis said. “It really just came down to mental toughness.”
Gregory booted an impressive 46-yard field goal, his second field goal of the day. This came following a South Williamsport touchdown to open the second half and extended the lead back to 21 for the Blue Jays.
Devlin was not done with the dazzling play. He escaped pressure three different times and stepped up into the pocket and made a pass to Gensemer who took it the rest of the way for an amazing touchdown.
“My line did a great job all game, I just moved up in the pocket to buy some more time,” Devlin said. “I have a great connection with all my receivers and with that play Isaac (Gensemer) saw I was in trouble and just ran into the flat and I was able to hit him on the sideline.”
Devlin has a knack for escaping pressure and keeping his eyes down field.
“He can feel the pressure, he keeps his eyes downfield,” Dennis said. “He’s just a natural and makes me look good when he makes plays like that.”
