FRANKLIN TWP. — Southern Columbia’s tough running game and stout defense outlasted Line Mountain and a heavy rainfall in a 55-0 victory over Line Mountain in the first round of the Class 2A District 4 playoffs.
Southern’s offense showed its high level of efficiency, scoring on the first play of its first two drives. The Tigers began the game with a 36-yard bomb from Stone Hollenbach that was reeled in by Gaige Garcia for the score.
After a timely interception by Wade Kerstetter, the Tigers were set up on the 16 of the Eagles.
“It felt great,” Kerstetter said. “It made our offense, set them up for great field position.”
Ty Roadarmel capitalized on the Eagles’ mistake and ran in the 16-yard score to put the Tigers up by 13 with 9:27 still left in the first quarter. The Tigers ultimately used four offensive plays to score their first 20 points against Line Mountain.
Roadarmel had an outstanding game, leading the Tigers’ potent rushing attack in yardage. He ended the night with five carries for 81 yards and two touchdowns in what was a balanced rushing attack for the Tigers.
“Being my best game, I can attest that to the line,” Roadarmel said.
While no Southern ball carrier surmounted 100 yards, the combination of Roadarmel, Gaige Garcia and Gavin Garcia produced 189 yards and five touchdowns on the night.
Southern’s defense completely shut down the Eagles’ offense, allowing 14 total yards and zero first downs until there was 1:21 remaining in the third quarter.
“The group’s playing the way they did all year, aggressively, physically,” Southern head coach Jim Roth said.
The Tigers’ defense created seven turnovers including four interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
“The secondary did nice job as far as coverage and so-forth,” Roth said.
Preston Zachman was able to return a fumble recovery 43 yards for the touchdown.
“I thought we really clicked today, everyone did their job,” Kerstetter said.
The Tiger’s passing game was not able to get going but Southern managed to score one touchdown through the air on Gaige Garcia’s 36-yard reception. Quarterback Stone Hollenbach ended the game 4-for-8 for 89 yards and a score but he missed a few receivers on errant throws.
“Threw the ball well early considering the conditions but as they worsened, things got a little wetter and there were a couple plays that we didn’t execute as well with the pass,” Roth said.
The Eagles were able to keep Tiger’s star wide receiver Julian Fleming in check, only allowing him two catches for 46 yards and no scores.
