NORTHUMBERLAND — Southern Columbia’s defense dominated the line of scrimmage and helped deliver them a dominating 69-7 win over Shikellamy on Friday Night.
The Tigers did not allow a first down until five minutes left in the third quarter. The Braves only managed three first downs on the game compared to Southern Columbia’s 24.
“We pretty much had them outmanned upfront,” Roth said.
The Tigers were relentless holding the Braves to less than 5 total yards at half. Peyton Pursel and Max Tillet added a sack each and rattled Shikellamy’s quarterbacks all game.
Shikellamy was unable to complete a pass and ended the game with zeros completions on seven attempts. The Tigers held the Braves to just 58 total yards while racking up 485 yards in their win. Southern defensive back Cade Linn returned an attempt 26 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.
The Tigers held them to nine three-and-outs, including seven consecutive.
On offense, the trio of the Garcia brothers and Julian Fleming pushed Southern Columbia to a win as each of the three Tigers added two touchdowns apiece.
The Tigers’ defense forced three fumbles while recovering two of them. Southern
Fleming returned a punt to the Braves’ 10, allowing Gaige Garcia to punch in the 10-yard score.
“Just kind of status quo for them,” Roth said.
Both of the Garcia brothers broke the 100-yard mark rushing.
“I thought they did a good job of making people miss and breaking some long runs” Roth said.Gaige Garcia finished with 10 carries for 115 yards and two scores while the Gavin added six carries for 153 yards and an additional two touchdowns.
“Its pretty cool right now,” Gaige Garcia said. “He had over a hundred yards, I had over a hundred yards, so having success in the run game is big.”
Southern Columbia quarterback Preston Zachman was efficient going four for six for 72 yards and two touchdowns.
While Fleming was not targeted often, he made the most of his touches. He caught three passes for 59 yards and two scores through the air.
“I just want to help out anyway I can with the team,” Fleming said.
Despite not a having a large role in the game plan this week, Fleming made his presence known even when he did not receive the ball.
“Its just running people off, you know blocking downfield for the backs,” Fleming said.
