FRANKLYN TWP. — Stone Hollenbach threw three fourth-down touchdown passes to lead Southern Columbia to a 39-14 victory over Mount Carmel in the District 4 Class 2A finals on Saturday night.

The Red Tornadoes’ defense were able to disrupt the Tigers’ offense in the first half, forcing Southern Columbia into multiple fourth down situations.

“They’re a real aggressive team, and everytime they play us they come to play,” Hollenbach said.

Hollenbach ended the night completing 8 passes for 119 yards on 16 attempts. Hollenbach was intercepted on a deep pass attempt to wide receiver Julian Fleming.

“They were really getting a lot of pressure up front in the first half,” Julian Fleming said.

Mount Carmel picked up three sacks in the game.

Two of Hollenbach’s fourth down passes were hauled in by Fleming, who was limited to three receptions against the Red Tornadoes and saw a safety shaded over to his side for the majority of the game.

However, Fleming was efficient, scoring two touchdowns on three catches.

“For the most part it was a double coverage kind of thing,” said Fleming. “Stone he put two great balls out there for me.”

Preston Zachman made the most of the defense double covering Fleming as he reeled in Hollenbach’s other fourth-down touchdown on a 10-yard reception.

“He’s a really talented guy and he can beat anybody in single coverage,” Julian Fleming said of Preston Zachman.

With Southern Columbia only leading 13-8, Gaige Garcia returned the second half kick-off 89 yards for a touchdown, returning the momentum to Southern Columbia.

On the kick return, Garcia cut across the field and hurdled a defender on his way to the score. Garcia helped his team’s cause by adding two more touchdowns on the ground. Garcia was a workhorse, grinding out 124 yards on 17 carries.

Southern’s offense overcame a stout Mount Carmel defensive line. The Red Tornadoes were able to apply pressure on Stone Hollenbach for most of the game.

“My biggest concern after the game was again the pass blocking.” said Jim Roth. “We had too many issues pass blocking.”

The Tigers defense stifled Mount Carmel’s run game, holding them to just 78 yards on the ground.

Of Mount Carmel’s 78 rushing yards, 38 came on a fourth-quarter carry from John Ayres which occurred after Southern’s reserves had entered the game.

The Red Tornadoes had more success spreading the Tigers out and throwing the ball than in their run game. Mount Carmel was able to throw for 162 yards on 27 attempts. However, Southern Columbia’s Jacob Davis was able to pick off quarterback Tom Reisinger.
